Clipper Maid of the Seas

It is 30 years ago today the Pan Am “Clipper Maid of the Seas” was destroyed by a bomb over Lockerbie.

It was flight PA103 from Frankfurt to Kennedy, via London.

I used to get that flight one Sunday every month for a period of 5 years. I caught that actual aircraft (memorable because of its name) very many times, I had a Pan Am frequent Flyer card.

To compound the coincidence, in the years between 1966 and 1977, when we lived in Carlisle, we used the Ice Rink at Lockerbie quite a lot. We were regular visitors.

Thirty years later it still brought a lump to my throat today.

As an aside, in those days there was no problem in spending time on the flight deck during your flight. When flying British Airways it always tickled me that all BA flights had the call sign “Speedbird flight”, then the flight number.
